Why We Travel

I was struck today by a quote from Leonardo da Vinci.

“Every now and then go away, have a little relaxation, for when you come back to your work your judgment will be surer… Go some distance away, because the work appears smaller and more of it can be taken in at a glance, and a lack of harmony or proportion is more readily seen.” – Leonardo da Vinci

It occured to me today that this is why we travel. As a busy working mom, wife, business owner, entrepreneur, blogger, household COO, kiddie-carpooler, activity planner, the space around me shrinks and traveling takes me out of the daily routine and into a space where my mind feels free to rest, recharge and expand.

I suspect it is the same for many parents and one of the reasons why travel has such a grip on our souls. In addition to expanding our knowledge of the world, distance clears our minds, allows us to reconnect as a family outside of the daily hustle-and-bustle and gives us renewed energy.

I thank Baron Baptiste for this discovery, as I am now entering week four of an intensive Yoga program inspired by his book, 40 Days to Personal Revolution. It includes an intense six-week period of six days of power vinyasa yoga a week, meditation, journaling and amazing insights into how we can be more present in our daily lives. In week four, he has a great quote about Restoration and allowing yourself time and distance to recharge:

“When I find myself being consumed – which can happen pretty quickly – it is very important that  I step back, gain some space, and let the closeness to the things of my life dissolve. This distance clears my head and gives me renewed vision and energy, which then boosts my productivity and creativity and expands my worldview.”

In a highly-connected world where iPhones, texting, video games, iPads and technologies dominate, travel is a powerful way to teach your kids how to unplug, recharge, strenthen family connections and expand their view of the beautiful world around them.

Namaste.
