Retro Riding: Hip bicycles for the whole family

Travel Tips

7 May

What began as a simple idea about families spending time together outdoors, launched me into what I soon discovered was a secret society of sorts. It is the unofficial retro bicycle club – riders knowingly head-nodding as they pass each other by; a quick glance back at the bike to check out the merchandise; a rider’s head held high, not just because she is riding a ‘sit-up and beg’ bike (so named for the upright position of the rider), but because she knows she’s riding something special. I had a sudden attack of bike envy.

America is catching on – retro-style Euro bikes, like UK’s Pashley, Italy’s Abici, Germany’s Retrovelo, and Holland’s Gazelle, are being imported, as much collectors’ items as status symbols, a knowledgeable insider’s prize. Large manufacturers now have their own retro line alongside their racers; US bike companies, like Electra, have created their entire brand around the retro feel; and small US bike builders are making customized rides for their cool customers.

The retro bike is back – in a big way. It’s made for cruising cobbled paths, for lazy days exploring the country, picnicking by the river, following old railway tracks, gathering wildflowers along the way, and for just spending time together. So romantic, so yesteryear, and can’t you just picture yourself there?

So when your family hits the bike trails this spring and summer, make sure you’re all looking good doing it!

For Mom

For Dad

For Kids

For the Whole Family

Who would have thought these incredible contraptions were available for our cycling pleasure? Biking really is for the whole family, and if the little ones are too small to reach the pedals, strap them into your bike and off you go! There are bikes for cargo carrying so you don’t have to lug a backpack full of picnic supplies, and even ones where a family of three who bike together, quite literally, stay together!
