A nostalgic family trip back to the Hyatt Maui Regency Resort and Spa

Hotels we love

15 Jun

It was nostalgic to be back at The Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa. When our girls were really little, we would meander through the winding paths of the property with their strollers, say hello to the myriad of birds, penguins and wildlife that make this property unique. Our girls’ favorite bird on property is a gray parrot named R2D2. I’m happy to report that R2D2 is alive and well, said his hello, and can still meow like a cat. What I love most about this property is the layout for families and because it sits at the end of the hotel strip in Ka’annapali, it feels less busy, but still provides easy access to the nightlife and amenities of Ka’anapali beach.

The lobby, grounds and select suites have received a modern upgrade since our last visit a few years ago, and the guest rooms I suspect (but has not been confirmed) will too. I can’t wait to see how the design of this property evolves while sticking to it’s rich Hawaiian history. Here are some of our favorite features of the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa:

Hang 10 toes at the baby beach. Hands down this kid-friendly sand beach is a hit for the tiniest members of your family. Toddlers and younger children will play for hours. Nearby, is a fast slide to excite the older kids (currently under construction during our stay). The waterfall Grotto Bar is also a big hit with adults.

Rent a private cabana for the day. Rent a private cabana beachside and you are just steps from the ocean. Rent snorkels, paddle boards and other fun floaties down the beach a bit at the Beach Activity Center. Here youu can boogie board some great waves without the reef. The cabana food service by Ūmalu is also outstanding and you are just steps away from the pool and Ululani’s Hawaiian Shave Ice, voted Maui’s Best Shave Ice.

Spurge at Sonz Steakhouse. This meal my friends, is worth the splurge. Our last night we celebrated with a steak dinner at Sonz Steakhouse and the meal was exceptional. Our server even made a special vegetarian meal for our youngest. The wine paired perfectly with our meal and we loved it so much, we ordered a second bottle to take back to the room. 😉

Save a night for the Drums of the Pacific Luau. We’ve don’t many Luau’s over the years with the kids, and the Drums of the Pacific Luau is one of our favorites on the islands for the entertainment and food. The food is good and the live fire dancing is not to be missed. Best part? After the Luau, you can walk the short trip back to your room and tuck the kiddos into bed.

Upgrade to Hyatt Regency Club service. I saved the best amenity at this property for last. Available to guests of Regency Club guestrooms, the all new Hyatt Regency Club lounge, located on the ground floor is beautiful and provides a sneak peak into a more modern design I suspect is coming for this hotel in future years. The private lounge offers personal concierge service, continental breakfast every morning (an impressive selection!) drinks and snacks during the day, and light hors d’oeuvres and desserts in the evening. Adult beverages served at a minimal charge and they have a great selection.

Spend an afternoon at the new Hyatt Residences Club pool and bar. The new Hyatt Residences Club ownership property is right next door and guests of the Hyatt can enjoy complimentary access to the Hyatt Residences Pool. We spent a day there and enjoyed the beautiful new pool and poolside service. At night they do a ceremonial lighting of the tiki torches and the kids join in the fun and run behind them as they light the tikis. A fun vibe and great add on to our stay.

And because pictures always tell a story better than words, Here’s a gallery of our favorite moments at the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa.

Disclosure: We paid for our stay at the Hyatt, but received upgrades and complimentary experiences for review purposes. As always, our opinions are our own.
